The Halal Monitoring Authority is a non profit organization established to provide assurance of genuine halal products through deployment of inspectors to inspect, regulate, monitor, supervise and label halal consumables from their sources to the consumer. The Halal Monitoring Authority promotes the highest standards of halal, thereby serving all segments of the community, alleviating the many doubtful issues arising in a halal cautious consumer’s diet. The Halal Monitoring Authority (HMA) is recognized as the most authentic Halal certification body in Canada.
| Why HMA does not certify paya |
Please Note: Due to
circumstances which cannot be controlled and monitored, animal parts
such as hooves ("paya") and organs ( oxtail, liver, brains, giblets) are known to be collected in one
container whether it be Halal or Haram. Due to this obvious
cross-contamination, the Halal Monitoring Authority does not certify
animal hooves and organs and advises everyone to exercise extreme
caution in regards to the consumption of any of such animal parts and
by-products.
| The Canadian domestic halal meat market |
The Canadian domestic halal meat market value is estimated to be $214 million with an average annual household expenditure of $1623. Muslims are ardent consumers of meat and meat products, with feast days and celebrations that often include several different meat dishes. On average, Muslim households spend $31 per week on halal meat products. This is almost double the Canadian household meat expenditure of $17 per week. (Statistics Canada , 2003). This difference in weekly household expenditures may partially be explained by the difference in average household size.
